Maker Day 2018
MAKER DAY
On Thursday MAY 10, 2018, I facilitated a Maker Day for the 50 Grade 5 students at Sandowne Elementary. The process took about three weeks from the planning stages, material acquisition and donation gathering, finding volunteers, to the day itself.
What is a Maker Day?
A Maker Day is a day where grade 5 students thoughtfully, and fully, engage in design thinking and creative problem solving. On this day students will be given the challenge of solving a problem. Teams will need to: identify a problem; think about the problem; design a solution to the problem; and build a prototype of their solution.
The students used real tools such as hand saws, drills, hot glue guns, tape measures, hammers, screw drivers etc to create an emergency shelter that could keep 4 people safe for 72 hours. They had to ensure that the shelters had a water source, waste disposal, a heat source, and was portable.
It was a very successful day overall and the students were engaged through-out the process.
